The Possum’s Breakfast
I was keeping a close eye on the first watermelon on the vines, which was growing nicely, from this…
To this…
Then the day I hoped would never come arrived. The possums have figured out how to collapse the top of the fence and get to the fruit growing on the wire.
Sigh. I guess more fortifications are in order.

The little bastards! Sometimes I think the kiwis have the right idea when it comes to possums. I hope you can fortify the wire - maybe a small electric current?

Hi Hel,
Thw only problem with the Kiwi solution is that possums aren’t native to NZ and therefore anything goes.
You’re right in a situation like yours the only real way to stop them is to build a cage around your plants. I know a lot of people have theories about how or what stops Possums eating your garden. The only way to be absolutely certain is to build a physical barrier between your plants and the outside world.
Good Luck
